Nadia Comaneci - (born on 12 November 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej / Now Onesti, Romania), Romanian gymnast. The first gymnast to earn a 10. a competition at the Olympics. Bela Karrolyi was an Romanian gymnastics teacher who was later Comaneci's coach and first became aware of Comaneci at the age of six. Comaneci participated for the first time at the national junior championships and finished 13th. In the following year, she won the title of champion. In 1972, at the communist nations' meet for juniors before the Olympics, she was awarded three medals of gold. After that, in 1973 and 1974 she won the all-around junior champ. At her first competition as a senior, in 1975 she beat out Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva the five-time European champion, winning four gold medals as well as one silver. The first female to ever successfully complete the backwards double salto after dismounting from an unbalanced parallel bar.
